Living Your Dreams

The members of Trilogy at Redmond Ridge are doing everything they can to support Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in its mission to provide quality care to all children regardless of ability to pay. They’re baking yummy strata and taking Santa/grandchild photos at the annual “Ho Ho Brunch;” they’re shouting “Bingo” at Bingo Bash fundraisers; they’re raffling quilts for the annual quilt raffle; they’re organizing book fairs; and they’re donning their cowboy hats at the Western barbecue and square dance. Now the members of the Pat Harris Trilogy Guild have even published a book to raise funds for Children’s Hospital. In the following interview, Lyle Hanson describes the process of creating Living Your Dreams: An Activity Guide for Trilogy at Redmond Ridge.

Thanks for taking the time to share this process with us, Lyle! How did the idea first come about to create an Activity Guide for the TRR community?
Living Your Dreams was conceived as a fundraising project for the Pat Harris Guild of Trilogy, with plans for all profits beyond publication costs going to uncompensated medical care for youngsters at Seattle’s Children’s Hospital. It has worked out that way, with approximately 50 cents of every dollar received for book sales going directly to the hospital.

The idea first came about a few years ago, when we were thinking of ways to fundraise for Children’s Hospital Guild.   We first considered creating a book about the “History of Trilogy at Redmond Ridge,” because enormous evergreen forests once covered the entire ridge, and there were lots of amazing logging photos and stories available. The original book was meant to include histories of the clubs and early Trilogy “pioneers.” After further discussion, it was decided that an “Activity Guide” to the Redmond Ridge community would be a great fundraiser, as current and potential community members would all take interest in such a project.

How many members have been involved with this project?

We enlisted a committee of Editor/Publisher, plus five, from the start. Along the way, we brought in two other experts. Cathy Creel, a professional formatter from Boeing Co., spent most of her early life in Children’s Hospital, and moved to Trilogy half way through the project. I was delighted to receive her expertise for the final formatting. I was also able to receive help from my daughter, Leanna Hanson, a graphic designer in Los Angeles. She designed the covers, and they are spectacular.  There was another group of Guild members that stepped forward and helped with marketing the book in our Cascade Club. This group will help out again later at our annual “Artisan Boutique” in November.

It was a huge task to gather the stories of so many members, clubs, and organizations in the TRR community. How long did this project take, and how did you go about organizing this task?

It took 23 months from when the motion passed until publication. At the outset, I had a brochure listing all clubs and their administrators, with contact numbers. I also had a variety of class offerings outlined on handouts from our fitness center. Several of our members had previous articles published in MTL’s magazine, and it was just a matter of getting everyone’s permission to reprint the articles. Four other articles and photos had been posted on a bulletin board in the fitness center, so I was able to use those. Then there were many other articles solicited from members that volunteer around the community, or who have survived life-threatening events. My wife, Marie, and I also contributed articles.

To gather additional member stories, we posted bulletins on the MTL website, such as: “If you have volunteered in the outside community, would you share your story for the benefit of underinsured kids needing health care?” For a few of the stories, I had heard about neighbors who had survived severe illnesses, and I was able to get them to write up their experiences.

Can you share a few of the stories that speak to the spirit of the people of the TRR community?

One highlight of this book is “Kevin M. Blowers – An Amazing Success Story.” (p.57) Presently, Kevin is in his mid-40s. Although physically disabled from a head injury that he received when he was struck by a truck at the age of 3 1⁄2, he has kept in great shape. He’s often seen doing some challenging exercises in the gym.

Kevin’s heartwarming story is ongoing. Since the book was published, he has told me several times that people have come up to him and said, “I didn’t know that about you.” Despite horrific odds, Kevin has proven himself as one who sets high goals and then reaches for the sky. On the back cover, Kevin looks “ripped” (in top shape) in his role as Equipment Manager for the Monarch Coed Senior Softball Team.

Below are some photos that also exemplify the spirit of TRR, and the kinds of activities in which our members are involved.

Another story that exemplifies the spirit of the members of Trilogy at Redmond Ridge is that of Catherine Creel (p. 61). At this stage in her life, Catherine and her mother, Judy, are seriously “giving back” to Children’s Hospital. Catherine has battled very serious health issues most of her life, and as this book’s formatter, she played a key role in its success.

Connie Nicholson’s story is another that I’d like to share (p.69). She climbed Mt. Rainier at age 65 with only her son along as her guide. Her determination and guts to succeed took her to the top when other climbers were getting sick and turning back.

Can you tell us about the publication process? After you compiled the community stories, what steps did you have to take to go from gathered content to finished publication?
Editing was done in-house with my wife, Marie’s, help. Cathy Creel, whose own story of survival is included in this book, was able to complete the formatting in two days while lying in a hospital bed at her home. For print-on-demand, self-publication, I chose to work through the website www.lulu.com, for two primary reasons. First, I’d had several prior satisfying experiences publishing books with Lulu. Secondly, I knew that I would be able to order any number of books (without a minimum order), and that they would be delivered in spotless shape. Lulu has always been timely, reasonable and reliable.

We found that we could print a 134-page soft cover book in grayscale (except for the full-color covers) for approximately $7.50 each, including printing and shipping. So, we doubled that cost as the final sales price for Living Your Dreams. The cost of the book is $15.00 – except for mail order, which requires another $5.00 for padded envelope and postage. So, for each book that is sold, $7.50 goes directly to Children’s Hospital, to help patients who are under-insured.

Are you pleased with the final product? What kind of reaction have you had to the Living Your Dreams book?
The final product has won unanimous acclaim, and members come up to my wife or me on a regular basis asking if we have any more of the books on hand. TRR also has two member realtors that are gifting the books to their new sales, and they have each asked if we have any more copies available. I’m delighted that this is developing into a fundraiser that should continue into the future.

How can the members of Trilogy at Redmond Ridge purchase a copy of Living Your Dreams? How can members at other Trilogy communities purchase this book?
Trilogy members who would like to order a copy of Living Your Dreams can phone Lyle or Marie Hanson at (425) 522-4835 or by email at XLNDOC@Comcast.net. TRR members will be contacted for delivery arrangements. Members at other Trilogy communities will have their copies mailed to their homes. The cost per copy is $15.00 for TRR delivery, and $20.00 for postal delivery. Checks should be made out to “Trilogy Guild,” please. Living Your Dreams is available for mail orders for all Trilogy communities immediately. The Guild will also be holding a two-day book sale for TRR Members on July 16 and 17.

Since this project is all about helping the patients of Children’s Hospital, can you tell us about the Pat Harris Guild of Trilogy, formerly known as the Children’s Hospital Guild?

The Pat Harris Trilogy Guild (formerly Children’s Hospital Guild of Trilogy) was formed in 2005 by member, Pat Harris. In 2008, Pat became seriously ill with cancer. During 2009, a group of Guild members moved to seek a name change. It was approved, and Pat was honored at a Guild meeting when the name change was announced. At present, the Guild roster is comprised of 50 members. Its vision is “to support Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in its mission to provide quality care to all children regardless of ability to pay.”

In addition to “Living Your Dreams”, other fundraising activities of the Pat Harris Trilogy Guild have included an annual “Ho-Ho Brunch” at Christmas time; Bingo Bashes; an annual quilt raffle; book fairs; Western barbecue, outright donations; and sales of holiday cards.

Lyle, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences in creating Living Your Dreams: An Activity Guide to Trilogy at Redmond Ridge. And thank you for giving so much of your time and energy to benefit the young patients of Children’s Hospital. We all wish you the best of luck with this ongoing fundraiser.

Welcome to the seventh article in the Club of the Month series on MyTrilogyLife.com. This month, we’re highlighting a group of women from the community of Trilogy at Vistancia who have gathered together to promote fellowship, to have fun, and to support those in need in the greater community. Read on to get to know June’s Club of the Month, the Trilogy at Vistancia Women’s Club, through the following interview with Jewel Ray Chaudhuri (President) and Claudia Thomson (Publicity Chair).

Jewel and Claudia, thank you for taking the time to share the story of your club with us. How did the idea for having a women’s club at Trilogy at Vistancia come about?

Several years ago, the women of Trilogy started the Ladies Lunch, through which we met in each other’s homes to get to know one another better and to enjoy a potluck lunch. After growing to over 100 invitees, it became challenging to host these lunches in a single home; yet, only an approved Trilogy Club could reserve the Tewa Ballroom.

So, club officers Paula DiVerde and Cathy Calhoun-Hoben (co-presidents), Mary Fitzpatrick (vice-president), Vicki Fredrickson (secretary), and Sheri Beckman (treasurer) founded the Trilogy at Vistancia Women’s Club (TAVWC) in 2007. Judy Greenlee, Vicki Bowe, JoAnn Talazus, and Lee Levine served as chairpersons. The club was launched in September of 2007, and 121 tickets were sold for the first potluck luncheon.

What is the mission of the TAVWC?

The mission of the TAVWC is to act as an umbrella for various social events that give the women of Trilogy at Vistancia the opportunity for social fellowship. This may include community involvement and/or charitable activities. In other words, we are social, charitable, and we enjoy having fun.

How often do the members of the TAVWC get together, and what do typical meetings entail?

We hold meetings once per month on the second Monday of each month. Our meetings usually consist of lunch followed by short programs on topics and themes of interest to Trilogy women. Past events have included such diverse presentations as fashion shows, the Arizona Broadway theatre, and “What’s on Your Bucket List?” – a presentation devoted to the achievements of our members.

The TAVWC has had many successful social events over the past year. Can you describe three events that were particularly special to the women of your club?

February Luncheon

There were “Songs, Flowers, and Valentines” for the 114 women who attended the February Luncheon on Monday, February 8, 2010. The Tewa room was decorated in a heart theme to put everyone in the mood for Valentine’s Day. Our President, Jewel Ray Chaudhuri, introduced the new 2010 Executive Board and Committees, and Betsy Kinter, Membership Chair, introduced the 20 new members for this month. As soft music played and vintage Valentines were displayed on the big screen, the ladies enjoyed their outstanding Valentine’s lunch with red velvet cake for dessert prepared by the Café Solaz staff.

The highlight, of course, was the entertainment of the Sweet Adelines. The quartet, The Golden Sparx, is part of the Sweet Adeline Chorus of Scottsdale. They performed several songs and received a standing ovation. In the tradition of Valentine’s Day, the quartet surprised our own bashful Gregg Snyder with a serenade and presented him with a red rose.

This sweetheart of a day continued as remembrances from past Valentine’s Days were read from the audience. These included a marriage proposal, a celebration of 58 years of marriage, long lost loves that found their way back together, and a sweet little girl and the story of her POW. The day ended with the 50/50 raffle and donated door prizes, including beautiful flower arrangements from Safeway. Additionally, a big “thank you” for the generosity and support of so many who filled the boxes with donations for our charity, Faith House.

March Luncheon
“What’s on your Bucket List?” was the theme for the Women’s Club luncheon on Monday, March 8, 2010. Everything was green as tables were beautifully decorated with shamrocks, blarney stones, and, of course, buckets trimmed in green ribbon. The staff of the Café Solaz prepared a delicious lunch selection of three salads with lemon squares for dessert for the 97 ladies in attendance, which included 6 new members.

It was a fun-filled program that started with a clip from the movie The Bucket List. Five ladies then presented their fantastic “bucket list” stories, which included sky diving, walking on glaciers in Alaska, catching a 400+ pound Marlin in Oahu, searching Italian roots, winning the Senior Olympic Gold in swimming, and entering a hot air balloon race. Everyone enjoyed the accounts of these amazing adventures, which ranged from exciting to emotional. If that wasn’t enough, a surprise guest, Dick Bojanowski (Bojo), sang “Galway Bay,” which is a song about a town in Ireland, to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day.

There was a presentation to our charity, Faith House, of framed pictures of families who live there. As always, the continued generosity and support of the Women’s Club for all the donations made to Faith House were greatly appreciated.

May Luncheon
The annual Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon was another huge success this year. This was attended by 166 ladies, which included 14 new members, marking a milestone for the Trilogy At Vistancia’s Women Club of over 500 members. WOW! It was a beautiful spring day as the ladies enjoyed Italian cuisine of lasagna, salad, and tiramisu prepared by our own Café Solaz staff.

Our fashion show, presented by Christopher & Banks and their sister store, CJ Banks, was the highlight of the afternoon. First, our Trilogy models had their makeup done by makeup artist Tracy Thompson and their hair by hairstylist Shasta Richards. They were then escorted by our own Gregg Snyder with assistance by Michael Santonino as they walked the runway and modeled casual wear clothing with stunning jewelry to accessorize their outfits. Thank you to our nine beautiful models: Yvonne Blackman, Micki Carlson, Sue Goldberg, Sue Harvey, Shelly Moore, Fran Nolan, Cheryl Reed, Debbie Richitelli and Sandy Schlager.

Faith House, our charity, presented a plaque for “New Group Volunteer of the Year” to the Women’s Club in appreciation for outstanding service in 2009-2010. We are honored to be recognized and thank the club members for their contributions.

You’ve mentioned Faith House as your club’s main charity. Can you describe this organization for us?

For nearly 35 years, Faith House Domestic Violence Shelter has provided victims and their families with safe haven and support while helping them gain independence through self-empowerment and education. Located in northwest Maricopa County, Faith House offers both emergency shelter for crisis situations as well as long-term transitional shelter for women and children. Thousands of victims have passed through these doors making life-changing commitments to themselves and their children for a safer and healthier future.

Does the TAVWC usually focus its charitable efforts on organizations like Faith House?

Yes, we focus our efforts on charities that better the lives of women and children. In the past, we helped the New Life Center, a shelter for women and children who were victims of domestic abuse. In 2009, we adopted Faith House as our main charity. We have also donated to Kids Against Hunger and St. Mary’s Food Bank, charities supported by Trilogy clubs.

What are some of the ways in which the TAVWC raises funds and builds support for Faith House?

At the monthly meetings, our members fulfill the donation needs published by Faith House. For example, in October of 2009, we held an “Olde Bags Lunch” in which our members filled their old handbags with toiletries for Faith House. In addition, for the past three years we have held the Holiday Home Tour to raise money for Faith House. In this event, six to eight Trilogy homeowners open their festive and well-decorated homes to the residents of Trilogy, along with potluck appetizers and cocktails. This is a well-attended event with approximately 450 to 500 tickets sold for the two nights of the tour. A silent auction of holiday specialty trees and menorahs decorated by Trilogy clubs and individuals also provides funding for our charity. For all of our efforts, we were pleased to be honored by A New Leaf, the umbrella organization for Faith House, as the new volunteer group of 2010.

Are there any upcoming plans for the TAVWC that you’d like to highlight?

In the works for the remainder of 2010 are plans for a Women’s Club cookbook highlighting favorite recipes of our members. Proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit Faith House. We are also working on the Fourth Annual Holiday Home Tour planned for December.

Is the TAVWC open to all of the women of Trilogy at Vistancia? How can new members join this club?

Yes, this club is open to all Trilogy women. We have two types of membership. Regular membership is open to bona fide members of the Trilogy at Vistancia Community Association and Trilogy at Vistancia residents. Associate membership is open to non-owner residents and contractual buyers who have not closed escrow. Guests are also welcome.

New members are welcome to join the TAVWC by completing a short application at the first luncheon they attend. At that time, they are added to the membership roster. Once a new member joins, she is invited to attend a new member coffee to meet the club’s officers and other new members.

Thank you, Jewel and Claudia, for taking the time to share the story of the TAVWC with us!

Postcards from Punta Cana

This past June, Trilogy members packed their bags and headed to the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This was the fourth Trilogy-wide vacation organized by Trilogy at Vistancia’s Activity Director, Gregg Snyder. To capture the fun in the sun of this latest trip, Gregg kept a daily blog of the dancing, dining, snorkeling, swimming, sailing, and high-flying adventures of the Trilogy travelers. As planning is underway for the next Trilogy-wide vacation this fall, we thought it might be a good time to take a look back at Trilogy’s last adventure. Enjoy Gregg’s blog, below, and keep an eye out for details of the next Trilogy Trip, which will be posted soon on MTL.

(You can also visit YouTube to view videos of the Trilogy Adventure in Punta Cana. Simply go to www.youtube.com, and then type “KivaClubVistancia Punta Cana” in the search bar.)

Sunday, June 6th
Trilogy Members have just landed in the Dominican Republic!

Trilogy members arrived at the local airport in the D.R. on Sunday afternoon and were greeted by the wonderful Club Med International G.O. (Gracious Organizer) team, Kevin Batt (my buddy from Club Med Miami), Sparrow (from Club Med Canada), and myself. Once they passed immigrations they were taken to the awaiting bus, their luggage was loaded, and we were off to the Club Med Village only minutes away. On the bus they were told about the resorts offerings, and all about the Wine & Food Festival that was going to take place during the week.

Once we pulled into the Club Med resort with our tired but excited Trilogy members, we were greeted by the entire G.O. team, and were given cold scented hand & face towels, cold drinks, and a small speech from the resort manager Eyal Amzallag, who welcomed our group and quickly had us all feeling at home. Members were then whisked off to their rooms to change and unpack. The afternoon was low-key, since most had taken redeye flights to arrive in the Dominican Republic. We had a delicious lunch, a short tour of the resort, and a glorious afternoon relaxing on the beach.

That evening we all met at the bar for a cocktail before heading into the restaurant where we had reserved Trilogy seating for all the evening meals. After dinner, the majority of the group went straight to bed to recharge their batteries in order to start the first full day off at 100%.

Monday, June 7th
Theme of the day was American Wines & Culinary Delights.

On Monday morning the members awoke to the sounds of the birds & the Caribbean trade winds. After breakfast, we picked up a program of the featured “Wine & Food Festival,” which was organized by Club Med for the week that we were in Punta Cana.

(Before I go on to describe our day, you may be wondering, “What is the Wine and Food Festival?” Here’s a brief description.

Club Med flew in 26 different chefs from the Food Network, culinary specialists, wine makers, and many other sponsors. For six delicious days in a row there were drink mixology demos and tastings with famous bartenders & sponsors in the late morning and evening. These were followed by cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs from world famous resorts, cafes and private restaurants from around the world. Members and resort guests all had the chance to taste and sample everything that was prepared, along with menus and samples to take home.

At 12:30pm, Celebrity Pit-Master “Dr. BBQ,” who is featured on the Food Network channel, hosted a different style of beach BBQ each day, along with the sides and drinks that best worked with the proteins – so the members were in heaven. The first day started with his BBQ ribs, coleslaw, and ice cold beers.

That’s not all! The afternoons started up again at 5pm as the winemakers held a daily wine tasting, starting with California wine, then on to Spain, Argentina, France, Italy and other countries, as well. After the wine tasting we had yet another tasting, which followed a theme of the day. Tasting themes included cheese, chocolate, cigar, and rum tastings.

No one went hungry during the week and everyone went home with all of the recipes from the different demos, profiles of all the celebrity chefs, and much more.)

As soon as members finished their breakfasts, they all went in different directions to take advantage of what the village had to offer in terms of activities, events, entertainment, or just relaxation. The entire day was open to play. Some went to Zumba classes or water aerobics, some snorkeled & sailed with the beach team, some hit tennis balls, and some went back to the beach and simply enjoyed doing “nada” (Spanish for nothing at all). That evening we had a private Trilogy-only dinner at one of the annex restaurants. We had a very nice pre-cocktail party followed by a celebrity chef dinner, which was “out of the box” for some members, but everyone enjoyed the fine cuisine.

Tuesday, June 8th
Theme of the day was South American Wines & Culinary Delights.

This was yet another fun filled day in Punta Cana for those who wanted to participate in events, as well as those who wanted to relax. Many of the members started their day with a morning walk around the resort, aerobics classes, stretching, water aerobics, or lying on the beach. Others slept late, as they had been up until all hours dancing in the night club.

Since it was South American day, we enjoyed a food demo overlooking the Caribbean ocean with Celebrity Chef Sur Torres from New York. She is the owner and chef at a Mexican restaurant in the Village and has won many awards for her cuisine as well her restaurant. Each member had a sample of the dish that she was demonstrating, and from there it was off to the beach for BBQ lunch. So much to eat, so little time!

The beach BBQ had a Brazilian themed called “Churrascaria,” which consisted of marinated beef with rock salt, beer & oranges over low coals, paired with a cold salad, rice and beans, and ice cold drinks, including the Brazilian National (rum) drink “Caipirinha.” Wow!

That afternoon members took part in other activates – such as practicing their archery, since they knew that we were having an all-Trilogy archery tournament on Thursday. Some went sailing or snorkeling in the warm waters, while others, like Linda Hurley, challenged themselves to the high-flying trapeze and trampoline. (These activities were on Linda’s “bucket list.”) Then there was Colleen Brownworth, who is afraid of heights but managed to do the trapeze and the trampoline, as well. Bravo to all! We then enjoyed another evening of cooking demos and drink tastings, before heading into the restaurant for delicious food and great company, as we shared stories of our days.

After dinner, some watched the nightly entertainment that was provided by the G.O. team before heading to bed, while others moved on to the “night club” that opened each night on the beach, where they showed us their best dance moves.

Wednesday, June 9th
Theme of the day was Italian Wines & Culinary Delights.

Today, Club Med’s Excursion Team organized a special, all-day excursion exclusively for our Trilogy group. The goal of this excursion was to give the Trilogy members a taste of the Dominican Republic in 12 hours.

First, a bus took us through the small villages so that we could get a glimpse through the windows of how the Dominicans live. Our guide told us about the history of the island, the income of the locals, what they eat, the popularity of national sports like baseball, the government status, religions, why so many Haitians work in the Dominican Republic, and so much more.

As we were on our way to the middle of the island, we stopped at a duty free shop that sold Dominican cigars, rum, jewelry, and art. We then had an hour-long ride that took us to the sugar cane fields. Here we boarded three old German military trucks (4×4’s) and headed out to see how sugar cane is grown and harvested. We were even able to taste the sugar cane fresh from the field.

We then rode the 4×4’s into the jungles of the D.R. to visit a small local village to see how the locals live. We drank fresh coconut water, sampled passion fruits, checked out a Dominican home and kitchen, and felt welcomed by the warm smiles of the people. Then it was off to have lunch at the wild animal reserve that was created by a good friend of mine named Rosella.

Upon arrival we were greeted by Rosella, her staff and a refuge full of animals. Some animals were wild, some had been mistreated, and others just adopted the refuge as a home. Rosella explained the reason she started the animal refuge, as well her mission to help the local villagers grow their own crops, repair their homes, clothe and educate their children, and much more. Her animal reserve is located on the “Shavon” river. This is where they filmed the movies Apocalypse Now, Rambo II and Anaconda.

After the small tour we were treated to a typical Dominican lunch in the jungle, alongside the river. We had beef, pork, beans, rice and lots of fresh, local fruit. After lunch, those who wanted to tour the jungles, learn about the animals, and see the different vegetation stayed back with Rosella. And what about the others?

Well, let’s say that about 95% of the Trilogy members chose to zip-line through the jungles, high above the trees. Wow – what an experience! Everyone tried levels 1, 2, and 3, but the group got a bit smaller when they offered levels 4, 5, 6 & 7, which were on the top of the mountain overlooking the tress, the jungles and the river. We had Peter Bell, Dick & Sharon Gilbert, Noreen Francis, and Pat Adler, who hiked up the hillside, even though it was hot & humid. Once we were at the top, it was all downhill from there! Great fun was had by all who tried the zip line.

Once we got back to camp to join the rest of the group, we boarded a riverboat that took us down the Shavon River with salsa music, rum & cokes, dancing, and just taking in the sights of the river and jungle. After an hour or so, we boarded our bus to head back to the resort. I think everyone had a great time even though it was a long day with nonstop moving.

Those who stayed at Club Med for the day enjoyed the resort’s activities, the beaches, warm water, and all of the wine and food demos, which were organized around the “Italian” theme of the day. That evening, everyone met up in the restaurant for dinner, and then it was off to the show and bar to finish off the day.

Thursday, June 10th
Theme of the day was Spanish Wines & Culinary Delights.

Thursday was “Sports Day” and the G.O. team organized a day of archery & petanque tournaments, sailing regattas, and other activities around the village.

The Archery Tournament started at 11:00am, and we had a great turnout for both the women’s and men’s divisions. All scores were totaled after three rounds to determine the winners with the most points. It was great to see everyone joking around and encouraging one another. Once that was finished, we headed in for a quick lunch before the Petanque (French style of Bocce Ball) Tournament began at 1:30pm.

Once again, we had a great turnout for this tournament, which was held on the beach under the coconut trees, which provided lots of shade. We also had the Caribbean trade winds to cool us off a bit. Trilogy couples battled back and forth to finally come up with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. After the tournament, many returned to the beach to relax and swim, while others took part in some of the other resort activities.

I took a group of 20 members on a private snorkeling and boat trip to the spot called the “Aquarium” to check out the coral formations, fish, and plant life. After we were finished snorkeling I took them to the “Natural Bath,” which is located a mile off shore in the middle of the Caribbean. When we arrived at this beautiful sand bar, where the turquoise-blue warm waters are only waist deep, I surprised the members with a floating bar! They had the time of their lives and we took a lot of pictures.

Once back at the resort, we all freshened up for the evening cooking & drink demo. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, followed by our nightly entertainment and dancing.

Friday, June 11th
Theme of the day was Portuguese Wines & Culinary Delights.

The morning started off with breakfast and then the usual activities of power walking, stretching, water aerobics in the sea, watching the morning cooking demos, and relaxing on the beach. Then it was time for the last of our All-Trilogy tournaments, with a sailing regatta organized by the Punta Cana Beach team.

Gene Adler was up for the race, and there were about 20 Trilogy spectators at the event. Were they all afraid to take Gene on? The winds were perfect side shore trades and one of the staff decided to enter into the competition, only to be surprised at Gene’s sailing abilities! Nice work, Gene!

The weather was perfect on Friday, so after stuffing ourselves at the BBQ on the beach with the Pit Master, most of us enjoyed a relaxing afternoon before the evening group cocktail party.

For the evening’s festivities, we all dressed in tropical, flowery prints – so we made for quite a good-looking group when we had our photo taken with the Caribbean waters in the background. After the cocktail party, we held a “Sports Awards” session at which we handed out medals to the winners of the tournaments in Archery, Petanque, Sailing, Zip-Lining, and Trapeze (for bravery). There was also a “Mr. 4th Place” award, which went to a member who always seems to receive a 4th place finish in our Trilogy trips to Club Med. I was even awarded a certificate of “Mr. Mom” for my role as organizer for the week.

At our delicious dinner that night, we celebrated some of our members’ birthdays and anniversaries, which made the meal even more special. We’re all sure to leave here with happy memories and close relationships.

Saturday, June 12th
Theme of the day was French Wines & Culinary Delights.

Saturday was our last full day and everyone was seizing the opportunity to “take it all in” during the short time that we had left in Punta Cana. They played sports, sailed, explored, relaxed on the beautiful beach, went to the cooking demos, and savored the tastings, which revolved around French wine and cuisine on this last day.

The weather was perfect once again, as it had been throughout our seven-day stay in the Dominican Republic. The staff was friendly and helpful, the food was great, and the drinks were even better. We knew would miss the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana. Before our last day was even complete, the members were already asking me where we would be heading on the next Trilogy trip.

Sunday, June 13th
Departure Day! Back to the States…

Trilogy members boarded a number of different coaches, as they were heading back to the states at different times all day Sunday. The G.O. team was there to send off each of the different groups, and to thank them for coming to Punta Cana. Many of the Trilogy members exchanged addresses with the G.O.s and invited them to come visit us at Trilogy.

This was the fourth Trilogy trip in as little as two years, and we’ll most likely start planning the next one shortly. Where will the next trip take us? Most likely we’ll either travel back to Ixtapa, Mexico, or to Sandpiper in Florida. Stay tuned to MyTrilogyLife.com for details!

Monarch Dunes
by Vic Williams

When golf course architect Damian Pascuzzo took his first look at a stretch of dramatic semi-dunesland near the Central California town of Nipomo, the traditionalist in him must have leapt for joy, while the mad scientist in him — the guy looking to turn the whole, overworked “links” idea on its head and push it into fascinating new territory — simply couldn’t be contained. He had sand to work with, and trees, and big, swooping, fescue-covered hills. He had it all.

When Monarch Dunes debuted in early 2006, it was clear that Pascuzzo’s cagey, curvaceous lass worked amazingly well within the developer’s modern housing project mold. He kept homesites well away from or above playing areas, and even today, homes never impinge on the course’s ability to rouse sharp emotions with every teebox or greenside view. Still, Monarch Dunes’ soul is rooted in the links and heathland courses of Scotland and Ireland. “The site itself really dictated that it had to be links style,” says Pascuzzo, a California native and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo graduate who works out of El Dorado Hills, near Sacramento, where he was the longtime design partner of the late Robert Muir Graves. “The soil is pure sand. If you look across Highway 1, you see all the dunes, then the ocean. We had to do that style of golf course; it would be a shame to do anything else.”

Pascuzzo and his design consultant, PGA Tour player and Central Coast native Steve Pate, excelled at nailing Alister MacKenzie’s No. 1 criterion for great golf design: Variety. When standing on the No. 1, tee you think it’s going to be all water and modern-feeling, but by No. 5 — a little “postage stamp” par 3 surrounded by fescue-bearded dunes that creates visions of No. 12 at Royal Liverpool — you know this ain’t no basic residential track.

Holes 6 through 8 are the finest three-hole stretch on the Central Coast. On No. 6 the drive must clear tufts of devil’s grass, then a big ridge that bisects several holes, then barrel to the bottom of a hill, just short of a lake, if there’s any chance of getting back up to the severely elevated, mega-deep, double-tiered green in two. It’s not just a good hole, it’s a great one; draped in tall eucalyptus with comely curves, it harkens to Bandon Trails and elicits a giddy feeling when you first see it.

No. 10 is another hole that, once Pascuzzo and Pate started digging, veered them off the blueprint.

“The original concept was a more traditional dogleg-left with bunkers down the left side. Then we realized this was our one opportunity to create a split fairway. We dropped the tee box five or six feet. You’ve got to hit a pretty good tee shot to knock it up there on the left, but you’re two clubs shorter than from the right. And the bunkering was just artistry in the field.”

From there Monarch Dunes keeps the spirit engaged through hill and dale, over frog-haired bunkers and across velvet bentgrass greens. “There’s a little bit of mystery in Monarch Dunes,” Pascuzzo says. “On No. 18, you know you hit it straight ahead, but what happens after that? That’s all intentional. No. 12 is the same way — you have to drive it up the fairway before you see the rest of the hole. It’s like the older courses in the Bay Area. You play it a second time and you’ll be a lot more comfortable; a third time, you’ll feel like you’ve known it a long time.”

Good as the Old Course is, Pascuzzo didn’t stop there. Next door is the fascinating Challenge Course, perhaps the best, and toughest, par-3 course in California — a dozen pure links holes with greens draped between heaving hills of sand and grass. A morning round on the big course, a great sandwich or salad in the clubhouse and an afternoon stroll through the Challenge? We can’t think of a better, or more fun, way to carve out 30 holes of fascinating coastal golf. FG
