5 Ways to Avoid the Doctor During the Cold Season

In the winter months, colds and the flu can run rampant. While there may not be a cure for the common cold, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep from getting sick this season.

 1.     Sleep More.

Sleep helps keep your immune system in top working order. If you aren’t getting enough rest, your body’s ability to fight off illness will be hindered.

 2.     Wash Your Hands.

Some suspect the reason we get colds more frequently during winter is because we spend more time inside around people who may be infected. Washing your hands often and keeping them away from your nose, eyes and mouth will help to keep germs away.

 3.     De-stress.

It has been found that people under persistent stress are more likely to get ill when exposed to cold viruses than people who are not. Marital problems, family drama, having a job that’s not commensurate with one’s abilities–these are all factors that will wear down your resistance to colds.  Look for ways to find peace within your life for the sake of your health. A yoga class, swim in the pool or an occasional spa treatment can work wonders.

 4.     Expand your social life.

Research has shown that people with varying relationships and a diverse social network have better immunity to cold germs than those with narrow social circles. Take small steps to widen your social circle, like joining a card-playing group or a book club within your community. Each of the Trilogy communities has dozens of social groups that welcome new members.

 5.     Drink more water.

Keeping up your fluid intake will also help your body fight off impending illness. If you’re dehydrated, your system will be subjected to more stress, and it could take longer to recover. Doctors recommend that people drink at least 64oz. of water a day. That’s equivalent to about 8 small glasses.

Although these ideas may seem simple, they are absolutely crucial to your health. With all you are doing this holiday season, take a little time to spend on you too!
